Find out how to apply for and renew your UK or Irish passport:

Who can get a U.K. passport?

  • If you were born in the UK.
  • One of your parents is British.
  • You've applied for British citizenship and have become a naturalised citizen.

What you need to apply for your first UK passport:

  • You will need an official copy of your birth certificate.
  • If you are British by descent you will need to include at least one of your parent's passport details.
  • If you are a naturalised citizen you will need your naturalisation or registration certificate and the passport you used to enter the UK.

How to apply for or renew your UK passport

  • You can apply online or via post.
  • You can get help with your online application from the Post Office.
  • It costs £88.50 to apply for a passport online.
  • If you would like to apply by post you can pick up a paper copy from your local Post Office.
  • It costs £100 to apply by post.

How long does it take to receive your UK passport?

  • After you apply for your passport and the HM Passport Office receive your documents, it should take 3 weeks for you to receive your passport.
  • It could take longer if they require more information, or need to arrange an interview.

How to apply for a child UK passport

  • Apply for a child passport if your child is under 16.
  • It costs £57.50 to apply online and £69 to apply via post.
  • You will need to have parental responsibility to apply for a child passport.

Do you need a UK passport urgently?

  • You will need to book an appointment at a passport office online.
  • A 1 day premium means you can get an appointment 2 days after your apply and will receive your passport at the appointment. You cannot use this service to get a child passport. This costs £207.50.
  • A 1 week fast track means you can get an appointment 1 day after you apply and your passport will be delivered to you a week later. You can use this service to get a child passport. This costs £166.50 and £135.50 for a child passport.

Who is eligible for an Irish passport?

  • If you were born in Ireland.
  • You are of Irish descent.
  • You've gained Irish citizenship through the process of naturalisation.

What you need to apply for your first Irish passport

  • Identity verification form.
  • Full civil birth certificate.
  • Proof of address.
  • Copy of your Public Services Card or original government issued photo identification document
  • Your Irish-born parent’s birth certificate, if born abroad to a parent born in Ireland or Northern Ireland.
  • Naturalisation certificate if you are a naturalised citizen.

How to apply for or renew your Irish passport

  • Online through Passport Online.
  • Via post through Post Passport.
  • If you apply online it costs €75 and €15 postage if you live outside Ireland.
  • If you apply by post it costs €80 and a €9.50 fee for 1 application or a €16 fee for a Family Application for up to 4 applications.

How long does it take to get your Irish passport?

  • Online applications usually take 20 working days.
  • Postal applications take at least 8 weeks to be processed.

How to apply for a child Irish passport

  • Apply for a child passport if you are below the age of 18.
  • You can apply online or via post.
  • To apply online it costs €20, plus €5 postage fee and to apply via post it costs €30, plus a post’s fee of €9.50

Do you need an Irish passport urgently?

  • You will need to book an appointment through the Urgent Appointment Service.
  • The offices are located in Dublin, Cork and London.
  • The Same-Day Turnaround Service Appointment, which can be booked 3 days in advance, costs €150. The Four/Five-Day Turnaround Service Appointment, which can be booked 3 weeks in advance, costs €75.
