As part of an ongoing campaign around social care, outreach staff and caseworkers from FFT have created a guide for advocates who are supporting Gypsy and Traveller families experiencing Children’s Services intervention. The guide contains an analysis of difficulties which may be experienced by Gypsy and Traveller families when engaging with Children’s Services and follows this with positive practice for dealing with this.
The guide provides information to advocates which will help them to signpost professionals towards resources to improve cultural awareness, challenge discrimination if it arises and ensure professionals are communicating effectively with Gypsy and Traveller families.
Speaking about the new advocates guide, Abbie Kirkby, Advice and Policy Manager at Friends, Families and Travellers (FFT) said:
“We have received an increased volume of requests from community members for support with Children’s Services cases in recent years. This can be a scary and confusing process for families and we wanted to share the things we have learned with advocates from other Gypsy and Traveller and mainstream organisations to make sure every family gets the support they need.”
