What to do if you buy, sell or store scrap metal.

  • You will need to prepare some information, e.g. personal details, national insurance number, bank details.
  • You will need a waste carriers license and scrap metal insurance.
  • Apply for a DBS certificate.
  • Contact your local authority to apply. You must apply for each local authority area you wish to work in.
  • You could be fined up £5,000 if you don’t have a license.
Changes to the law
  • It is now a crime to pay for scrap metal with cash.
  • You can only pay with electronic payment or by cheque.
  • The fines for breaking the scrap metal laws are now much higher.
