On Thursday 16th April, Channel 4 are due to broadcast a Hardcash production, ‘Dispatches: The truth about Traveller crime’.
In advance of the broadcast, Sarah Mann, Director of Friends, Families and Travellers said:
“It is not a whole community that commits a crime, it is an individual. Yet, the Dispatches show on Channel 4 is framed in a way that puts the whole of the Traveller community to trial by press. Imagine a world where you are judged by the actions of others and where you are assumed guilty before innocent. It’s not a world I want to live in – but it is the world Channel 4 is creating. We could stand on soapboxes, we could call them racist – they don’t want to listen. At the heart of it all, we’re just pleading with them to see the humanity in Gypsy and Traveller individuals in our society and to treat them with compassion, dignity and respect.”
